The Golden Globes vergeten alwéér dat er ook vrouwelijke regisseurs bestaan

Jaar na jaar zijn er geen vrouwen genomineerd voor Best Director of Best Motion Picture.

Het begint gewoon gênant te worden. Na jaren vragen om meer erkenning en meer diversiteit in award shows als de Oscars en de Golden Globes blíjven dit soort onderscheidingen een circle jerk van witte mannen. Ook dit jaar krijgt de Golden Globes het voor elkaar om geen enkele vrouwelijke regisseur te nomineren in de belangrijkste categorieën Best Director en Best Motion Picture.

Vrouwelijke genomineerden voor de Golden Globes 2020

De genomineerden voor Best Director zijn Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”), Sam Mendes (“1917”), Todd Phillips (“Joker”), Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”) en Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”). Voor Best Motion Picture werden “The Irishman” (door witte man Martin Scorsese) “Marriage Story” (door witte man Noah Baumbach)
“1917” (door witte man Sam Mendes) “Joker” (door witte man Todd Phillips) en “The Two Popes” (door witte man Fernando Meirelles) genomineerd.

Stuk voor stuk goede films die zeker erkenning en lof verdienen, maar daarmee wordt er totaal geen aandacht besteed aan bijvoorbeeld Lulu Wang (“The Farewell”), Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”), Lorene Scafaria (“Hustlers”), Olivia Wilde (“Booksmart”) Marielle Heller (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) of Céline Sciamma (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”), zoals ook regisseuse Alma Har’el tweette.

"We stemmen op films, niet op gender"

De voorzitter van de Hollywood Foreign Press Association (de organisatie die de Golden Globes uitdeelt) Lorenzo Soria verdedigt de nominaties tegen Variety: “Wat er gebeurt is dat we bij het stemmen niet letten op gender. We stemmen op de film en op prestaties." Het doet ons een beetje denken aan de tenenkrommende uitspraak van Roland Molendijk die zei dat er weinig vrouwen in de Top 2000 staan omdat ze ‘gewoon minder snel goede muziek maken’. Barf.

In de 77-jarige geschiedenis van de Golden Globes werden er slechts vijf vrouwen genomineerd voor Best Director. Dat waren Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) in 2015, Barbra Streisand (“Yentl” en “The Prince of Tides”), Jane Campion (“The Piano”), Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) en Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker” en “Zero Dark Thirty”). Met het oog op die cijfers wordt het knap lastig om te claimen dat er dit jaar toevallig vijf betere films waren die toevallig door mannen zijn gemaakt.

In 2018 waren – verrassing – ook alle genomineerde regisseurs mannelijk. Dat liet Natalie Portman niet zomaar onopgemerkt voorbijgaan toen zij de award mocht presenteren.
